Two East Brewton residents remain behind bars and are facing a variety of drug charges after their arrests last week, according to East Brewton Police officials.
Leslie Renea Presley, 27, and Charles DeWayne Lett, 30, were arrested after East Brewton Police conducted an investigation into illegal drug activity at Sumerchase Apartments on Williamson Street.
Sgt. Clemente Brooks said officers had received a complaint from a caller to the department that drug sales were occurring at the complex.
“I went to the location and conducted a brief investigation into the activity that had been reported to our department,” Brooks said. “Based on the information I was able to get during that investigation, I was able to find enough evidence to make it necessary to arrest the two suspects.”
Brooks said Presley was arrested at the apartment complex and was charged with distribution of a controlled substance and second-degree charges of promoting prison contraband based on information in his investigation.
Lett, also arrested at the apartment complex, was charged with attempting to committ a controlled substance crime following the investigation, Brooks said.
The pair were transported to the Escambai County Detention Center where they were booked on the charges against them.
As of press time Tuesday, both suspects remain in jail in lieu of bond. Bond for Presley was set at $50,000 in the case. Bond for Lett was set at $5,000.
“We will continue to investigate these types of complaints and follow up,” Brooks said. “We will make arrests in these cases. It’s our job to keep our citizens safe, and that’s what we strive to do every day.”
