Outreach serves up ‘a blessing’

Published 1:05pm Thursday, November 22, 2012

For volunteers with Healing of the Souls Outreach, Thursday’s preparation and distribution of 600 meals in Brewton and Flomaton was “a blessing.”

The organization — which already distributed about 500 boxes of food earlier this month — prepared turkey dinners with all the trimmings for those in need of a meal for Thanksgiving day. While some people were fed at the East Brewton Civic Center and a church in Brewton, others came in to pick up meals or waited for volunteers to deliver them.

“It’s a blessing to be able to volunteer,” said Jerry Kent, who helped deliver meals. “We’re the ones getting the blessing.”

Haley Daniel and her mother Danielle served drinks and meals with a smile, while more volunteers packed the kitchen to cook the meals.

Even before noon, Healing of the Souls director Janet Byrd was looking for more turkey. She said the operation was busy in Flomaton, as well.

Exhausted but smiling, Byrd was pleased with the network of volunteers and the turnout for the meal.

“It’s all God,” she said.
