Rough first half costs JDCC basketball against Southern Union

In their second and final game in the month of December Saturday at Southern Union, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team remained winless as they dropped a 28-point loss, 73-45. The loss dropped JDCC to 0-9 this season.
The first half Saturday was the difference in the game for the Warhawks as they were outscored by 25 points in the half—44-19—to fall down early. In the second half, the Warhawks were outscored by three points, 29-26, as Southern Union took the win by 28.
“We ran into a buzz saw with Southern Union,” JDCC head coach Allen Gainer said. “They came out on fire and we couldn’t throw it in the ocean to start the game. We got down 33-6 before we got going. We competed in the second half, but still have a long way to go.”
Corderrio Hasewood led the Warhawks in the loss with 10 points. Dee Jay Braggs followed with eight points while Fletcher Forte, Adrian Rich and Devonte Pope all had six points each.
Matt Bass, R.J. Bowers and Anthony Bell all had three points each in the loss.
Braggs and Forte both finished with two steals each while Bass and Forte had three assists each.
Braggs finished with six rebounds to lead the Warhawks. Braggs had five rebounds on defense and one on offense along with Forte, Bell and Keaynon Gulley.
The Warhawks shot 15-for-49 from the field for 30.6 percent and was 4-for-14 from the 3-point area. JDCC shot 11-for-19 from the free throw line for 57.9 percent.
Hasewood was 6-of-11 from the line for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks committed 12 turnovers in the loss.
The game Saturday at Southern Union was the final game in the month of December for the Warhawks. JDCC will take off a month for Christmas break and will return to action on Monday, Jan. 7 at Marion Military. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
The Warhawks will return home to Warhawk Gym on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they host Alabama Southern for a 7 p.m.
The game with the Eagles of ASCC will be the conference opener for the Warhawks and the first of 14 straight conference games to end the season.
Of the 14 conference games for the Warhawks, seven will be at home and seven will be on the road. Conference games for JDCC include Alabama Southern, Wallace-Selma, LBW, Chattahoochee Valley, Enterprise, Bishop, and Faulkner.
All games are set for 7 p.m. except the road game at Wallace-Selma and Alabama Southern. Those games will tip at 7:30 p.m. The road game at Chattahoochee Valley in Phenix City will see at 7:30 p.m. EST (6:30 p.m. central time) tip.
