A high-speed chase through Brewton early Saturday morning ended with the suspect’s vehicle crashing — and a shooting, according to officials.

The suspect, who has not been named, was traveling into Brewton when the deputy began pursuit, officials said. As the chase accelerated, Brewton police officers joined the pursuit to assist the deputy.

The pursuit traveled through Brewton and onto Alabama Highway 41 North. Officials say the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed near the Tippens Eddy Road intersection along the road. Following the crash, the suspect and unnamed deputy were involved in an altercation, and the deputy shot the suspect, officials said.

The suspect was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation was on the scene just after 5 a.m. Saturday to conduct an investigation in the incident.

The officer involved in the incident was not injured.
