Flash flooding possible Friday

Information released from the National Weather Service has put the Brewton area under a flash flood watch from Friday morning through late Friday night.

The watch includes portions of Alabama — including Escambia County — as well as northwest Florida.

The watch has been issued since heavy rains are expected to be dumped on our area over the next 36 to 48 hours. Already saturated ground conditions have increased the risk of flooding in some areas. Elevated river levels stemming from last week’s rains combined with as much as five inches of rainfall over a short period of time could lead to the potential flooding. Some higher rainfall amounts are possible in isolated areas.

A cold front is expected to stall across the region on Friday as a wave of low pressure moves along the front. This stalled condition will generate several rounds of rainfall — some heavy at times — along portions of the central Gulf Coast area.

A flash flood watch means conditions may develop leading to flash flooding. Residents in the watch area are advised to monitor conditions and updated forecasts to be prepared to take action should a warning be issued.
