Brewton City Council members were in a unique position Tuesday to replace two members of the city’s school board.

A committee of councilmen interviewed several candidates for the position before recommending Regina Watson and Mark Manning.

“I want to thank the panelists who came to interview with us,” councilman Fred Barton said. “Everyone was qualified. It was a very hard decision.”

Watson will fill the term of Lillie Dove, who resigned at the end of the summer. That term will expire May 26, 2015.

Manning will fill the term of Terrill Neal, who resigned when his family moved to California. That term will be up May 23, 2017.

Councilman Joe Watson abstained from the vote when the council approved his wife Regina for the school board seat.

Joe Watson said he wanted to commend the committee that chose the school board members for using a thorough process.

“It went tremendously well,” City Clerk John Angel said.
