Two Brewton men are behind cars after allegedly breaking into Amazing Grace Café in Dozier Wednesday night, with one leading police on an hour-long chase through a wooded area.

Crenshaw County Investigator Mike Johnson told the Star-News Thursday that the sheriff’s office received a call around 10:40 p.m., that someone had broken the front window of the business.

Johnson said when officers arrived they stopped a vehicle near Amazing Grace in which they located 23-year-old Christopher Ladale Pugh.

Johnson said 27-year-old Shawn Curtis Haskew hid out in the woods near the store for around an hour, and that a tracking dog was called to help find the suspect.

“Officers found a cash register with assorted money in the wood line adjacent to the store,” Johnson said.

The men are charged with burglary III, theft of property II and criminal mischief, and are currently being held in the Crenshaw County Jail.

Johnson said officers from the Alabama Game and Fish and the Covington County Sheriff’s Department assisted.

“We appreciate their assistance in helping us locate these suspects,” Johnson said.
