TRM gets two wins over Excel Monday

In their first home games of the season Monday night against Excel, T.R. Miller’s Lady Tigers and varsity Tigers came away with wins over the Panthers while the B-team Tigers started their season with a loss.
In B-team action Monday, TRM lost 35-31 to fall to 0-1 this season. In girl’s action, TRM roared with a 39-10 win to move to 2-2 this season.
In varsity action, TRM won 58-47 to start their season 1-0.

Excel 35, TRM B-team 31
The T.R. Miller B-team started their season with a 35-31 loss to Excel Monday night at home.
The Panthers outscored TRM 23-11 in the first half. In the second half, TRM rallied with a 20-12 advantage, but took the loss by four points.
Excel led TRM 11-4 after one quarter and outscored the Tigers 12-7 in the second quarter.
In the second half, down 28-13 with 4:04 left in the third quarter, TRM used a 9-0 run over the final two quarters to cut the lead to 28-22 with 5:36 left in the game.
Excel built a 35-27 lead with 41.9 seconds left in the game, but TRM got as close as 35-31 with 13.4 left, but took the loss by four.
Joshua Jolly led in the loss with 13 points while Michael Campbell had 12 points. Hayden Atkinson had three points in the loss.
TRM shot 6-for-18 from the free throw line while Excel was 3-for-8.

TRM Lady Tigers 39, Excel 10
TRM’s Lady Tigers opened the game on a 29-0 run to help aid them in a 39-10 win over Excel Monday night.
TRM led 12-0 after one quarter and 29-1 at the half.
In the third quarter, TRM outscored the Lady Panthers 8-4 to increase their lead to 37-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Excel ended the game on a 5-2 run, but TRM earned the win by 29 points.
TRM was 8-for-20 from the free throw line while Excel shot 1-for-4.
Steely Ruzic led TRM with 12 points. Ruzic hit three 3-pointers in the win. Morgan Longmire added six points while Kyla Bell, Mekiah Williams, Tiana Stallworth, and Akilah Brazile all had four points each.
Emonea Curry had three points and Makiyvia Campbell had two points.

TRM varsity Tigers 58, Excel 47
Down 26-19 at the half, the varsity Tigers of TRM outscored Excel 39-21 in the second half to claim a 58-47 win.
While the second half rally as a key to the win, another key was the play of Chardian Johnson. Johnson poured in 32 points for TRM in the win. Trae Walker added 12 points for the Tigers.
TRM varsity boy’s coach Juan Johnson said his team did not panic Monday after falling behind early to Excel.
“I though our ability to continue to play hard defensive regardless of our struggles on the offensive end was a big part of the game,” he said. “Obviously we didn’t shoot it very well to start the game. Our kids didn’t panic. We’re a little older now and the maturity showed, which was good to see, as we managed the game and chip away and just found a way to win.”
Excel led TRM 18-5 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, TRM rallied with a 14-8 advantage to cut the lead to 26-19 at the half.
After opening the third quarter with a 28-19 lead, TRM used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 28-27 with 5:01 left in the third quarter.
TRM went on to outscore Excel 18-7 in the quarter to grab a 37-33 lead heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, TRM built a 44-33 lead with 5:56 left in the game only to see Excel use a 7-0 run to get within 44-40 with 4:14 left to play.
From that point, TRM outscored Excel 14-7 to get the win by 11 points.
TRM shot 18-for-33 from the free throw line while Excel was 14-for-36.
