Thanks to a citizen tip, a convicted sex offender was arrested for new violations Tuesday after he was found living at an illegal address in East Brewton.
Chief Deputy Mike Lambert with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said 21-year-old Daniel Leon Miles holds a 2012 rape II conviction involving a child less than 16.
“Under the law, convicted sex offenders are required to register their place of residence and employment because there are certain requirements those addresses have to meet,” Lambert said. Of those is the location’s proximity to schools, he said.
“First, we found that Mr. Miles was not living at his registered address; instead, it was determined that he was living at the Village East Apartment Complex in East Brewton,” Lambert said. “That was the first violation, failure to notify of a new address.
“Secondly, the location where (Miles) was living is 72-feet from W.S. Neal school,” he said. “The law says he cannot live within 2,000 feet of a school, and Mr. Miles was well within that.”
Miles, who was out on probation from the 2012 conviction, remains in the Escambia County Detention Center as the district attorney’s office attempts to have his probation revoked, Lambert said.
“It’s because of the public’s help that we were able to make this case,” he said. “It takes this kind of help from the public to keep our eye on these sex offenders. Information like this is always welcome, and we will follow up on any leads that are submitted to us.”
