TRM girls win 2 straight

The T.R. Miller Lady Tigers basketball team won its first two regular season games this season at home versus Straughn and on the road versus Monroe County.

TRM 41, Straughn 7

Behind tough defense and a dominant 19-point third quarter, Miller won in blowout fashion 41-7 over Straughn.

Kyla Bell-Barton led Miller with 10 points. Alijah Fountain had eight points.

TRM 51, Monroe County 34

Miller closed out the third quarter with a 36-27 lead. The Lady Tigers were able to outscore Monroe County 15-7 in the fourth to win its third game of the season.

Steely Ruzic led Miller with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Janazsia Nettles had 13 points, three rebounds, an assist and a  block. Kyla Bell-Barton had 12 points, seven rebounds and one steal.

In boys action, TRM suffered a 67-36 blowout loss. Miller was outscored 40-17 in the first half.

Joshua Jolly led the team with 16 points and three assists. Michael Smith had seven points with six rebounds. Jordan Williams and Michael Campbell  each had four points.

Miller had 37 turnovers for the game and gave up 31 offensive rebounds.

The team was handed its first loss of the season on November 28 versus Straughn, 50-49. Straughn closed the game on a 5-0 run. After a free throw violation by Straughn, Miller got the ball with nine seconds left in the game. Jolly, who finished with 18 points, drove to his left towards the baseline and raised up for  a potential eight-foot game-winning shot. Albeit contested by Straughn players, Jolly had a good look at the basket but the shot would hit the backside of the rim. The ball was then rebounded by a TRM player but time expired before another attempt could be made.

Michael Smith ended the game with a team high 21 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
