After a 1-26 season last season and a 1-15 mark in conference play, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team will begin play for the 2009-2010 season this Thursday on the road against Marion Military Institute.

JDCC shows 11 players on its roster this season, with only two returning players from last year’s squad.

“We have had a very difficult preseason,” JDCC head basketball coach Allen Gainer said. “We’ve lost several players for various reasons from discipline to family sickness and we are down to just 11 players.  I’m pleased with what we have and think that it could be a strong team, if we can keep the rest of them together and healthy.”

One player that has really stuck out to Gainer has been 6-2, 170 lb. guard Kentrail Brown.

“I’ve been especially pleased with how well Kentrail is picking up on things and how hard he is playing,” Gainer said.

Marquis Williams (5-7, 165 lb. guard) and Jamey Goddin (6-2, 200 lb. guard) are other players Gainer noted. Goddin is a sophomore transfer from Northwest Florida.

“Marquis makes our team very fast and difficult to press,” he said.  “Goddin plays with a tremendous amount of effort and desire and makes us more willing to compete as a team.”

Gainer said that Justin Burroughs (6-1, 185 lb. guard) has a chance to be one of the top offensive players in Alabama and possibly in the country.

Along with Burroughs, Gainer noted that returning player Logan Campbell (6-6, 210 lb. center) is showing good things.

“Logan is also doing a great job of defending on the post for the team and getting up and down the floor for a big man.”

One key return is former T.R. Miller Tiger Damien Jackson.

Jackson saw time with the Warhawks two seasons ago, although he did not play last season, but is back with the Warhawks for the 2009-2010 team.

“He has picked up where he left off two years ago playing great defense and shooting incredibly well from 3-point range,” Gainer said.

Corey Redfearn, 6-3, 170 lb. guard, is another former Tiger.

“He has been a great surprise and should compete for minutes at four of the five spots,” Gainer said.

Tra Felder, a 6-0, 170 lb. guard, works hard every day in practice for the Warhawks Gainer said, and is getting better and better.

“I’ve been especially pleased with how good he is getting at our pressure defenses,” Gainer added.

Brandon McCloud, Dennis Miller, and Tramaine Elliott anchor out the Warhawks.

“Brandon has an opportunity to be very good for us offensively,” Gainer said. “Dennis plays hard and can create match up problems for smaller guards and Tramaine should be a strong shot blocker and allow us to extend our defenses.”

Those 11 make up JDCC’s current roster and Campbell, Burroughs, Jackson and Goddin are the team’s four sophomores.

As for the schedule, JDCC has 24 games scheduled with 13 being home and 11 away and 16 conference games.

“Due to potential budget cuts, we are only playing 24 games this year,” Gainer said.  “It will make for a slow start to the season, but should give us time to make improvements between each game.  Hopefully we will have fresh legs and be able to compete in our tournament.”

JDCC’s first home game will be Thursday, Nov. 12 against Pensacola Christian College at 7 p.m. at Warhawk Gym.
