Help firefighters by being prepared
This week local firefighters will be out in full force to spread the word about fire prevention and fire safety. It is a topic they know well and the entire community would be well served to open their ears and act on what they hear.
While these men and women are trained to rescue people from burning buildings, it is not something they want to do on a regular basis. By taking simple measures at home, each and every resident can help increase their chances of surviving a house fire without injury. By making sure smoke alarms are properly installed, that children know what to do in an emergency and having a fire evacuation plan, families can help protect themselves and firefighters.
While the Brewton Fire Department will be busy this week installing alarms in local homes and speaking with students at local schools, businesses should also do their part by reinforcing any fire evacuation plan and safety measures they have implemented.
In our view, Fire Prevention Week offers an opportunity for all of us to take measures that could ultimately save a life.
