A high-speed chase ended in gunfire and a manhunt for suspects that shot at law enforcement officers Sunday morning.
At 12:32 a.m. Sunday, an Atmore police officer attempted a traffic stop of a gray Chevrolet truck on Wilson Avenue. As the patrol officer approached the vehicle, he identified the occupants of the vehicle.
When he attempted to question the driver of the vehicle, the driver sped away, traveling north onto Jack Springs Road.
The officer was then involved in a high speed pursuit of the vehicle until it turned into a field on Jack Springs Road and Smith Dairy Road, where it became stuck.
As the defendants exited the vehicle, the suspects fire two shots at the officer. As the back-up unit arrived to assist, an additional shot was fired at that officer.
Tracking dogs from the Department of Corrections were called to the scene. Additional rounds were fired from the defendants while the dogs were trailing the suspects.
The names of the suspects are being withheld until formal charges are filed.
Carlee said officers from the Flomaton Police Department, Poarch Creek Indian Police Department, Escambia County Sheriff's Department and the 21st Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force responded to assist Atmore officers.
