In their last two outings, the Jefferson Davis Warhawks' basketball team gained a conference win on the road before returning home and suffering a disappointing setback.
With two regular-season games left on the schedule, the Warhawks are 6-21 overall and 4-8 against teams within their conference.
Warhawks 76, Wallace-Selma CC 75
A Feb. 17 game on the road against Wallace-Selma Community College saw the Warhawks fall behind in the opening half only to regroup and come away with a win.
Although the first 20 minutes of the contest was played virtually evenly, the hosts controlled the flow enough to hold the lead most of the way. As the two teams entered the locker room for the halftime break, the Warhawks found themselves down by five, 40-35.
With Kenny Thompson and Greg Dickinson leading a determined second-half charge, the Warhawks began slowly cutting into the lead before overtaking Wallace with less than ten minutes remaining in the game. Despite several potentially costly turnovers in the final minute of action, JDCC was able to hold Wallace at bay and exit with a 76-75 victory.
Offensive leaders for the Warhawks were Kenny Thompson, 21 points; Greg Dickinson, 15 points; Jamal Carson, 14 points and Jeff Foster, 12 points.
Bishop State CC 67, Warhawks 58
As the Warhawks returned home for a Feb. 20 conference matchup with the Bishop State Wildcats, they were looking for their fourth win in the last six games.
A 15-2 Bishop run to start the game, however, made the goal of a victory an uphill battle. JDCC fought back as the first half progressed to cut the lead down to a single point, but Bishop responded to the Warhawks' rally and held a 29-23 halftime advantage.
The Wildcats continued to control the action in the second half, as they stretched the 6-point lead they enjoyed at the midway point into a 67-58 win.
Kenny Thompson scored 21 points to lead the Warhawks while Marcus Alexander contributed 14 points to the team's offensive efforts.
