Life-saving reminder: Install working fire alarms
Over the past year, The Brewton Standard has printed a number of stories on house fires. While most of these fires did not result in injury or death, a victim this past weekend was not so fortunate. Now, firefighters are reporting that the fire alarms in the house did not have working batteries. Perhaps the rest of us should use this as a reminder to verify that our own alarms are installed and, just as important, working.
Take a few minutes away from reading this editorial and imagine that you wake up in the middle of the house with your room filled with smoke. Will you be able to get to your children and other family members to wake them up and get them out of the house? The truth is, you don't know. The fire and smoke could be too much to overcome. It doesn't take a vivid imagination to know how awful that situation would be.
If you are at home right now, get up and check your fire alarms. If you are at work, make a note to check them first thing when you get home. If you do not have fire alarms, buy some tonight or call the fire department and they will be glad to help you get them installed.
In our view, the lives of our children and other family members should be protected. Fires happen everyday to people from all walks of life. None of us are immune. A fire alarm could save a home. Even more importantly it could save a life.
