A Brewton man accused in the stabbing of a former girlfriend plead guilty last week assault, first degree and now faces the maximum of 15 years behind bars.
Billy Calvin Stallworth, originally charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first degree assault which is assault using a deadly weapon and causing physical bodily harm.
After pleading, Stallworth was sentenced to 15 years and one day in prison. He will be eligible for parole in five years. If he is ever granted parole, he will have to undergo five years of supervised probation.
District Attorney Mike Godwin said he felt the plea was fair.
Stallworth, 31, of 905 Hamilton Ave. in Brewton, was charged in the January 2002 stabbing of Andrea B. Lane, 30, of St. Nicholas Avenue.
Officials responded to Lane's residence where they found her lying on the living room floor suffering from multiple stab wounds and lacerations.
Lane was transported by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital where she was treated.
According to officials, Lane was watching rented movie videos with two friends on the night of the stabbing. Lane allegedly went to her room where she was attacked and stabbed. One of the friends ran out of the trailer and called the police. Both friends were on the scene when police officers arrived.
Lane and Stallworth had allegedly been involved in a relationship at some point prior to the attack.
According to officials, Lane identified the attacker as Stallworth. He was later arrested and charged with attempted murder.
