Several local groups are taking donations for the men and women serving overseas, as well as for their families in the Brewton area.
Kristie Richburg is the head of the 1st Detachment's family support effort. According to Richburg, the group will be gathering care packages for the detachment. She said packages can include Vienna sausages, candy, nuts, books and magazines, toilet paper and baby wipes.
More information is available from Richburg by calling 296-1136.
The Salvation Army is not soliciting donations, but will accept them for the families of soldiers. Some families will need help with some household payments while their spouse is on active duty. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 955, Brewton, AL 36427 or taken in person to Mae Downing at D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital.
The Red Cross is also working to assist family members and friends contact servicemen and women overseas.
Several area churches are working with families and other agencies to try and determine how they can best assist the soldiers and their families. Many churches have started special prayer lists for servicemen and women and their families.
The Brewton Standard will publish more information as it becomes available.
