Judge Edwin Nelson, 63, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 after a long battle with cancer. He was a native of East Brewton and a resident of the Birmingham area for most of his life. He served as a magistrate and district judge in the United States Federal Courts for the past 30 years. He had served as a member of the U.S. Navy and graduated from Cumberland School of Law in 1969. After running a successful private practice in Ft. Payne, he returned to Birmingham in 1973 to serve as a magistrate judge. In 1990, he was appointed by then-President George H. Bush and confirmed as a U.S. district judge where he served until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda Nelson of Cropwell, Ala.; a daughter, Allison Nelson of Cropwell; a son, Patrick Nelson of Memphis, Tenn. and four grandchildren
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Simon Peter Episcopal Church with Rev. Van Forman officiating and Kilgore Funeral Home of Pell City directing.
