T.R. Miller golf team places fourth at sectional

The T.R. Miller High School golf team competed at the state sectional at Lagoon Park Golf Course in Montgomery on May 1. The team finished in fourth place with Montgomery Academy claiming the overall team title.
The two schools scoring the best scores, Montgomery Academy and Elba High School, advanced to the state tournament.
Along with the first place and runner-up teams, the top two individual scorers from the remaining squads qualified for state. T.R. Miller's Tripp Owens qualified for one of the two spots along with Taylor Griswell of Alabama Christian Academy.
At the state tournament, held at The Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove course in Mobile on May 12 and 13, Owens finished in ninth place overall.
Montgomery Academy took the team championship, led by Clint Calvert who finished with the top individual score.
Prior to the sectional and state tournaments, Owens competed in the 14- and 15-year-olds' division at The Arrowhead Masters held at Tiger Point Country Club in Gulf Breeze on Apr. 5 and 6. The tournament is an event of the AJGT.
Owens finished second in the division, firing a score of 75 on both days for a total of 150 for the tournament.
Ages 14 through 18 are eligible for the overall championship which was won by Chris Pinney, a senior at Gulf Breeze High School, who shot 74-71-145. He was followed by Johnathan Hughes, a 15-year-old of Panama City, who placed first in the 14- and 15-year-olds division with a score of 76-70-146.
The overall third place winner was Cory Cooper, a 17-year-old of Long Beach, Miss., who scored 71-77-148.
Owens, a freshman at T.R. Miller, finished in fourth place overall with his score of 150.
The 14- through 18-year-olds' field at the tournament consisted of 40 junior golfers from the Southeast.
