To the editor:
Please identify the organization behind the ad "Billion Dollar Bob." Are Alabamians to be played for a fool yet again? I am one of the 23 percent who will pay higher taxes and I pray it passes. If it does not, I will advise my children to leave Alabama and move to a neighboring state. For too long, special interests and a do-nothing legislature have held Alabama back while our neighboring states widen the gap between us. With not enough money for education, state troopers, a college scholarship fund, drugs for the elderly and countless other deficiencies, how can we say we cannot raise taxes, especially property taxes? We can double our property taxes, and as we all know, they will still be the lowest in the nation.
Alabama's current taxation hits the poorest people the hardest. It is time for Alabamians to wake up and support this fair, equitable and vital tax reform plan for the sake of better jobs brought by a better educational system and for the sake of our children and grandchildren. If we will spend a few extra dollars a year now - and some will not have to do that - it will come back to all of us in spades. With foresight, Alabama can become a leader not a laggard. No one ever got ahead by being last.
