The Brewton Standard was one of two Escambia County newspapers recently judged among the best in Alabama. Overall, The Standard finished second in General Excellence in the Alabama Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, an improvement of one spot over last year.
Seventy-six newspapers entered the contest, and 2,825 entries were submitted. Results from the editorial contest are added to the advertising contest for the final results.
The Standard was recognized with 12 editorial awards in addition to its General Excellence honor. The awards include five first-place awards, four second-place awards and three third-place awards.
The Standard won 11 awards in the advertising portion of the contest.
The Standard won first place awards in the following categories; Best Lifestyle/Family page, Best Use of Photographs, Best Human Interest Column, Best Sports Single Event Story and Best Local Sports Column.
Second place honors were earned for; Best Public Service, Best Editorial Page, Best Feature Story and Best Sports Feature Story.
The Standard was recognized with third place awards for: Best Sports In-Depth Story or Series, Best Use of Color and Best Editorial Column.
Editorial staff members at the paper include managing editor Robert Blankenship, lifestyles reporter Lydia Grimes, sports reporter Scott Cooper and Randy Winton, who covered several T.R. Miller football games last season and was honored with two awards for that coverage. Grimes, Blankenship and Crist were also honored for stories and photos.
The Tri-City Ledger, in Flomaton, won third place in its circulation category.
