The Brewton Police Department (BPD) is wanting to warn local residents that they will be cracking down on certain traffic and ordinance violations.
On the heels of the recent Click-It or Ticket effort, Police Chief David Lovelace said officers will continue to enforce seatbelt laws and that tickets will be given to violators.
During consecutive weekends, the BPD held several checkpoints at various locations within the city. Lovelace said his officers issued a total of 83 citations for violations of seatbelts usage as well as lack of insurance and driving without a driver's license.
Lovelace said he encouraged local motorists to obey seatbelt laws and that failure to do so could cost them money.
Along with looking for seatbelts, Lovelace said several other ordinances will be put into focus in coming weeks and months. Among those is the city's noise ordinance. A motorist may be fined $131 for breaking the ordinance.
Another problem that police officers will be looking into is vandalism of city signs and other property. Lovelace said local residents should be mindful of city property.
Another problem that the police department plans to concentrate on is speeding, especially on Hwy. 31 south.
The chief said focusing on these issues will help make Brewton safer for residents and those traveling through.
