Two late runs for the Brewton Dawgs proved costly for the Covington County Babe Ruth team in baseball action Wednesday.
The visiting Dawgs started the season with a 2-0 win against the Covington County unit.
The game was a scoreless tie going into the sixth inning. The Dawgs threatened to score on a passed ball, but Kevin Durden was thrown out at the plate.
It was the second time a Brewton player was thrown out at the dish after a passed ball. Eli Cook was thrown out at the plate in the top of the third inning for the third out to end a Brewton scoring opportunity.
Durden's out in the sixth inning, however, was the second of the inning. The Dawgs still had a chance to score with Joseph Turner lurking on the base paths. Turner came around to score in the inning to give the Dawgs a slim 1-0 lead.
Covington County loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs, but failed to score as Brewton starting pitcher Patrick Sorrells got out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Dawgs used the speed of leadoff batter Jacob Salter to add to the lead in the top of the seventh inning.
Salter reached base on a single, stole second and third base and scored on a passed ball.
Kurt Prater went to the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Dawgs and got the save retiring the Covington County batters in order.
Sorrells was the winning pitcher going six innings. He allowed no runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out eight and hit two batters. Prater got the save pitching one inning of hitless ball. He recorded to
strikeouts.
Christopher "Tank" Huckabaa started the game on the mound for Covington County and went the distance allowing two runs on four hits and three walks.
He hit two batters. Covington County's four hits in the game came from Dewayne Gladwell, Cole Carroll and Kenny Skipper. Carroll had two hits in the game.
The Covington County squad returns to action Saturday against South Monroe in Frisco City beginning at 11 a.m.
