Dr. Marsha Raulerson of Brewton was presented with the "Elizabeth Jenice Riley Memorial Inspiration Award" given by Alabama First Lady Pasty Riley on Friday, April 4, at the Jenice Riley Heart to Heart Ladies Luncheon. This luncheon was held on the lawn of The Governor's Mansion in Montgomery.
This award is given in memory of Elizabeth Jenice Riley, the late daughter of Governor Bob Riley and the first lady. Jenice was the former director of development at Kid One Transport.
Kid One Transport is the only non-profit transit system in Alabama delivering free transportation to thousands of children and expectant mothers who have little or no means of transportation and are in need of health care.
Since the non-profit began six years ago, Kid One has provided over 50,000 trips to over 4,000 children and expectant mothers in Alabama who need to reach medical care. Kid One transport currently covers 27 counties in Alabama but has not received the necessary funding needed to expand into Escambia County.
There is an estimated 176,000 children in Alabama eligible for Kid One's service, which means that they live in a home with no car or no reliable means of transportation.
The Elizabeth Jenice Riley Memorial Inspiration Award is presented annually. Officials said Raulerson was selected based on her undying love and advocacy for the children of Alabama.
Dr. Raulerson is on the Board of Censors of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and she continues her efforts to raise the necessary funding to bring Kid One Transport into Escambia County full-time.
