Those walking along the sidewalk behind the businesses in the downtown historic district of Brewton this past week may have noticed something missing. On Wednesday morning, city employees were busy watering the recently-placed plants hanging along the boardwalk when they noticed that one had been stolen.
The Brewton Tree and Beautification Board placed the potted plants along the boardwalk recently and are hopeful that the public will help them in recovering the stolen property. They are offering a $500 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the theft.
The arrangement consisted of petunias, impatiens, springerii fern, coleus and others. The wire that the pot was hanging from was apparently cut when it was taken from its location behind The Hourglass.
Joe Gordy, a member of the Tree and Beautification Board, said the group was disappointed when they learned of the theft.
Despite the theft, the Tree and Beautification Board plan to continue placing the plants at various locations throughout the historic district. In fact, Gordy said three plants will be placed in the coming week and that others will follow along Mildred Street and Pensacola Mill. In all, Gordy said about 130 plants will be placed at various locations within the city.
