This past weekend, two Brewton area teams competed in the state Babe Ruth All-Star tournaments for their age groups, in Huntsville. Both teams scored impressive wins before being sent home.
There are a couple of reasons that we want to share congratulations with the teams.
The first, and this is something that developed several years ago, is that the teams are actually made up of players from both Brewton and East Brewton. Rather than trying to field two teams from a limited-size pool of players, organizers decided that by instead forming one team, our towns could put together a more competitive team. The results over the past few years would seem to bear that out.
The second reason, and this is one that sports teams from Brewton at all levels have achieved, is that on the state's biggest stage, our young athletes performed admirably on the field and like gentlemen (or women) off the field.
It's one thing to succeed between the lines, as they say. All too often our society allows those who do so to slide when it comes to their behavior once they get outside of them, though. Young athletes from this area have shown us time and again that you can play well on the field and then behave responsibly off it.
Like so many other area teams have demonstrated before them, this year's two Babe Ruth teams reinforced that Brewton is a city that develops champions.
Congratulations to the 14- and 15-year old Babe Ruth All-Stars for your state runs this year. Your communities are proud of our accomplishments and the example you set.
