Dear Editor,
On July 5, 2003, Escambia County Branch 5027 held their first annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Greater Mt. Triumph Church, 170 Carver Avenue.
Our State President, Rev. A.L. Shanklin was the guest speaker. His topic was the "NAACP in the 21st Century" and the areas in which the organization is going.
The focus of the NAACP is to put into place strategic plans for the community. We are focusing on Legal Redress, Education, Economic Empowerment, Voter Registration and Youth Development.
Rev. Shanklin stated that "the Escambia County Branch has come along way in eradicating racism in this county. Under the leadership of Rev. Dane Robinson as President and Vice Presidents Sam Holly and Anthony McKenzie, this branch has done a better job in the past two years than at any other time. Contrary to popular belief racism is dead but its offspring are alive and well"
We also established a WIN division of the NAACP. WIN stands for Women in the NAACP. We enrolled 25 women and 25 youth.
This program is being led by Mrs. Cynthia Shanklin and she will be coming back to get this part of our organization off to a good start. We already have several businesses sponsoring this program, "A Back to School/Stay in School Bash at the Houston Avery Park." Details of the event will be announced in the very near future.
Any business that wants to participate please contact us at this address, NAACP Branch 5027, P.O. Box 154, Atmore, AL.
Our building will be up and running in a few weeks and you will be able to contact us there.
We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the Greater Mt. Triumph Church and their membership/ Without their generosity we could not have been as successful as we were. Thanks to all who helped out with the preparations for the dinner.
If there is anything that we can do to help in any way please feel free to call on us. We are still looking for those donations.
Dane Robinson
President,
Escambia County NAACP
Branch 5027
