Brewton and East Brewton are slated to receive $300,000 for continued U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work on flood mitigation in the area.
Sen. Richard Shelby announced Thursday that the local project was among several statewide energy and water projects that were included in a Senate Appropriations committee funding bill.
Technically, the funds have been provided for the Corps' general investigation work, a Shelby press release said. The Corps of Engineers has been working on a flood mitigation plan for Brewton and East Brewton which could include a series of levees, dams or other possible solutions. The study is expected to take several more years to complete.
Shelby also announced that the Delta Regional Authority is scheduled to receive $7 million for, "additional transportation and infrastructure funding, as well as funds for economic development and skills training."
Escambia County was recently added to the counties covered by the Delta Regional Authority.
According to Shelby's office, the funding requests were approved by the appropriations committee, and the Senator expects full House and Senate approval of the funding very soon.
Shelby is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
