Rumors can be dangerous things. They can cause a lot of anxiety and trauma for those who are effected. That is what happened recently to some of the families of members of Detachment I, 1165th MP Company of the Alabama National Guard.
A rumor and email was circulated that the unit's housing had been bombed in Iraq. Some families members were worried and upset for a while until it was made clear that the report was not true.
Georgia Lanier, whose son-in-law, Stephen Mallet, is a member of the unit, said that their family had heard it but knew it was false.
The support group for the local unit met on Sunday, July 20, at the Greater Brewton Area YMCA to discuss their problems and in support of each other. Rogene Martin, Executive Director with the American Red Cross, discussed services available to the families. Dan Shaddock, Director of the YMCA, spoke to the group about ways to handle their stress while their loved ones are gone.
