Voters in Escambia County will head to the polls on Tuesday with one issue before them. Amendment One, the controversial tax and reform plan, will be accepted or rejected by Alabama voters in its entirety.
This election will feature a couple of statewide changes that go into effect for the first time this Tuesday. The first is voter ID and the other is extended polling hours.
In the past, each county set the hours that it's polls were open. The legislature recently passed a law that all polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The change is a welcome one by people who had to travel to and from work, or for other reasons found the 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours difficult to manage.
Secretary of State Nancy Worley recently kicked off a publicity campaign reminding voters that they will need at least one form of identification in order to vote. Acceptable forms of ID will include a drivers license, employee card, student ID, utility bill, bank statement, Social Security card or check, veteran's check, paycheck, Medicaid card, hunting or fishing license, gun permit, Medicare card, EBT card, U.S. Passport, military ID, birth certificate, naturalization document, adoption record, name change record or other government documents.
Worley said if voters have questions about what form of identification will be accepted, they should contact the local probate judge, or her office.
Escambia County's probate judge, Rachel Agerton, can be contacted at the courthouse or by calling her office at 867-0301.
