Ray Madden, utilities director for the city of Brewton, said that the City of Brewton Gas Dept. joined a nationwide observance of Public Natural Gas Week, which runs from Oct. 5-11.
Brewton is one of more than 900 community-owned local gas distribution systems in the United States.
According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, the overall efficiency of natural gas from the source to end-user is about 91 percent. That means that nine out of 10 units of the primary energy taken from the ground actually reaches the customer's gas appliance.
Natural gas also emits approximately 30 percent less carbon monoxide than coal, according to Madden. He also said it produces virtually no sulphur dioxide, the primary cause of acid rain.
According to Madden, there is a 70-year supply of recoverable natural gas in the United States, and that domestic production meets over 90 percent of the consumer needs here.
