Brewton and East Brewton merchants have reported a strong start to the holiday shopping period, and are anticipating a strong final three weeks to close the season.
The weekend after Thanksgiving, usually viewed as the official kick-off to the shopping season, got off to a solid start.
The final shopping days before Christmas will be kicked off with Downtown Christmas in Historic Brewton, which will be held Thursday, Dec. 4 and Friday, Dec. 5.
Plans for the event include the lighting of Downtown Brewton Thursday at 5 p.m., special sales, refreshments, entertainment and an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Weaver is not the only one who expects the Downtown Christmas event to benefit local holiday sales.
Ann Ramirez, of Treasure Chest, is also looking ahead to the event.
Kathy White, business manager at NDI, said that the season was off to a good start there.
Gwen Minchew, in the customer service department of Fred's in East Brewton, said likewise.
