The Brewton City Council voted unanimously last night to name city Fire Chief Lawrence Weaver the new chairman of Project IMPACT, replacing departing chairman Sheriff Grover Smith.
It is required that the chairman's position be filled by someone other than an elected member of city government.
The council also voted to approve $53,651 in matching funds the city will have to pay if $2 million worth of airport improvement grants it has applied for come through.
The state has asked for the city to go ahead and guarantee that its portion will be there.
The grants the city has applied for are to cover a wide array of improvement projects at the municipal airport.
The council also voted to cancel its Dec. 23 meeting, because of its proximity to the Christmas holiday.
Mayor Ted Jennings was absent from last night's meeting, leaving Mayor Pro Tem Frank Cotten in charge of the proceedings.
