Mr. Woodie A. Carroll Sr., 76, of Foshee Road, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 in a local hospital after an extended illness. He was a native of Whistler, Ala. and a resident of Brewton since 1957. He was a member of Brewton First Baptist Church, founding member of Knights of the Round Table, U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II, member of the Lions Club, member of American Legion, Brewton Youth Football coach and retired from Jefferson Smurfit Corporation with 33 years of service. He was one of Tom Brokaw's World War II "Greatest American Heroes." He was preceded in death by two brothers, David Arthur Carroll and William Herbert Carroll and three sisters, Viva Carroll, Ina Marie Carroll and Bertha Mae Holcombe.
He is survived by his wife, Belle Allen Carroll of Brewton; three daughters, Shelia A. Hunnicutt and Claudia E. Blair, both of Montgomery and Tashiana C. Weismore of Brewton; two sons, Woodie A. Carroll Jr. and William Allen Carroll, both of Brewton; two sisters, Rita C. Morgan and Yvonne C. Vick, both of Orange Beach, Ala.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. at Brewton First Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Fitts and Rev. Ron Headley officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
