Man accused of taking van held in New Jersey

Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 a call came into the Brewton Police Department from Alco Auto Sales in Alco.
Odell Cash told the police that a man had come in and taken a 1995 Astro Van for a test drive and had not come back. On Monday, Jan. 12, the police department received a Teletype that the police in Clarksboro, N.J. had taken both the car and driver into custody.
Steven Dale Byerley, a white male, with an address of 111 Mayo Street in East Brewton, is being held in Clarksboro, N.J. He was carrying an Arizona identification card at the time of his arrest. He will be brought back to Brewton and charged with theft, first degree which is a Class B felony.
Monday, Jan. 12. the Brewton Police Department received a call to go to Washington Circle where there was a report of a fight. Upon arrival the police arrested a juvenile and charged him with possession of crack cocaine. He was later transported to Bay Minette to the Juvenile Detention Center.
Chief David Lovelace and the Brewton Police Department have had several calls reporting flowers being stolen from graves in Union Cemetery. The chief reports that the department is keeping a close check on the cemetery and anyone caught will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Chief Lovelace has also issued a waning that the police will be cracking down on all traffic violations.
