It's that time again, the annual "Great Backyard Bird Count," held over President's Day weekend.
In readying for the count, Brewton area bird lovers have already been seeing the vibrant yellows of the American Goldfinch, the brilliant red of Northern Cardinals, the dazzling blue of Bluejays, etc.
The flurry of flocks of Chipping Sparrows, Song Sparrows and White Throated Sparrows or the magnificence of a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers certainly brightens our cold, weary winter days. You can see these birds in your backyard in Escambia County, Ala. It doesn't cost anything but the price of a little birdseed to participate in this count. Go to www.birdsource.org and follow the directions for information on the count.
You can pull up a map of Alabama and see the towns that have participated. The Brewton dot on the map is growing, with 24 species reported.
So, this President's Day weekend, consider participating in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count and help put Brewton on the birding maps.
