The Lights Keep Shining!
Our "Light of Legacy" this week is Dr. Mary Spencer DeShield. She is a native of Century, Fla. and daughter of the late Albert Spencer and Essie Spencer.
Dr. DeShield received her high school education at Southern Normal School in Brewton.
After graduating from high school, she matriculated to Florida A &M University in Tallahassee, Fla. where she earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy (summa cum laude) and her doctor of medicine degree from Howard University College of Medicine.
While at Howard she was inducted into Alpha Omega Honor Society for her outstanding scholastic performance and achievements.
Her internship and residency was done as a specialty in internal medicine at Medical Center of Delaware in Newark, Del. (1986-1989) and as chief resident in internal medicine (1989-1990).
She received a fellowship in medical oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pa (1990-1992).
Dr. DeShield is certified and licensed to practice pharmacy in the states of Florida, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Her certification is through the American Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Internal Medicine (internal medicine and medical oncology) and the Board of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine.
She has been appointed assistant professor of medicine at University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md.; director of Cancer Clinical Trials Research, Shore Health System of Maryland and attending physician, Medical Oncology, Shore Health System of Maryland.
She is married to Dr. Dennis DeShield (M.D.) and they have three children, Kathy, Jonathan and Rowena Maxine.
They reside in Easton, Md. and are members of TriLife Christian Center in Easton.
