While her top goal was her team's 67-29 Southwest Regional semifinal win over Tarrant, T.R. Miller Lady Tigers sophomore Joy McCorvey reached a significant milestone Wednesday when she collected her 1,000th career point.
McCorvey went into Wednesday's game 10 points shy of the 1,000 barrier. She reached it on a field goal from inside the lane with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter.
"It's nice, but now I can move on to other things," McCorvey said.
McCorvey is just the fifth T.R. Miller girl to score 1,000 career points. She joins Deanna Jackson (2,398), Ashley Samuel (2,155), Felicia Jackson (1,911) and Valerie Etheridge (1,015) in that elite group.
McCorvey was aware of the milestone. When asked at Wednesday's postgame news conference how many points she now had, McCorvey had the exact answer.
"I've got 1,002," McCorvey said.
When Samuel scored her 32 points Wednesday, it marked the 11th time this season she has outscored the opposing team.
Samuel has outscored W.S. Neal three times, Northview and Escambia County twice, and Tarrant, Monroe County, Clarke County and Red Level once.
Speaking of Samuel, the T.R. Miller senior has a chance to do something only 18 players have done in state history, score 800 points in a season.
She went into Saturday's regional championship game against Sumter County with 715 points so far this season.
Samuel would have to average 28.3 points a game for three games if the Lady Tigers reach the state finals.
Did those who attended Wednesday's game notice how the main scoreboard spelled T.R. Miller—T.R. MILLR.
While it was not necessarily an error, it would have been nice if the University of South Alabama's scoreboard would have listed an individual player's players to go along with team fouls for fans to follow.
In fact, I've only seen a couple of basketball gym scoreboards all season list individual player fouls.
Maybe it is just the way things are done here, but coming from Illinois almost every scoreboard will list an individual player's fouls. It's just something to help the fans follow the game.
