Billy announces candidacy for office of District Attorney

Assistant District Attorney Steve Billy has qualified as a candidate for the office of District Attorney of Escambia County with the State Democratic Executive Committee. The democratic primary election will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004.
Billy, 46, is a 1975 graduate of T.R. Miller High School in Brewton where he played football for four years and is now an active member of the quarterback club. He graduated from Faulkner University where he majored in business and received a law degree from Jones School of Law in Montgomery in 1997.
Billy has worked in the District Attorney's office since 1995 and has been the county's only full-time Assistant District Attorney got over six years. He owned and managed a small business in Brewton for 10 years before he began working for the District Attorney.
Steve and his wife Beth have been married for 19 years and have four children, twin boys Stephen and Joseph, 13, Laurel, 8, and Matthew who was lost to leukemia at 14 months in 2001. Beth is employed as an administrator at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton. The Billy family are all active members of the First Baptist Church of Brewton where Steve has served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir president.
The Billy twins, Stephen and Joseph, attend Brewton Middle School and Laurel attends Brewton Elementary.
Billy has served as a Boy Scout Leader, little league coach and on the Board of Directors of Brewton Chamber of Commerce, and Brewton Little League. He is a member of the Brewton Kiwanis Club, Brewton Council of the Arts, Escambia County Democratic Executive Committee, and is an active Gideon. Steve's hobbies include camping, fishing, hunting and canoeing.
Billy also serves as the prosecutor for the Domestic Violence Crime Unit, Secretary-Treasurer of the Escambia County Bar Association and is a member of the American Prosecutors Research Institute, and the Alabama District Attorneys Association.
