W.S. Neal's Alphonso Gross and T.R. Miller's Trent Davidson have been selected to play in the North and South All-Star Game in Montgomery on July 16.
The football contest is part of an all-star week, which also includes games for baseball, softball, basketball and soccer.
"It's a big honor to get to play in this game. Those players who are not selected for the Alabama state team are then put into a pool of players for spots in this game," W.S. Neal coach Shane Smothers said.
Gross (a 5-9, 180 lb. sr. running back) rushed for 2,407 yards and scored 36 touchdowns last season. He has signed to play at West Virginia.
Davidson (a 6-5, 250 lb. sr. tight end) haueld in 13 passes for 277 yards and scored two touchdowns last season. He has signed to play at Alabama.
While Gross is expected to play in the game, T.R. Miller coach Jamie Riggs indicated Davidson will be unable to perform.
"Trent is taking summer classes at Alabama this summer and his classes will conflict with the game date. Regardless, it's a good honor for him to get chosen to play," Riggs said.
Gross may not be the only Blue Eagle to suit up for the game. Chris Johnson (a 6-2, 280 lb. sr. defensive lineman) is a first alternate. Johnson has signed to play at Itawamba Junior College.
"If any players at his position can't play, Chris will get the first opportunity to play in the game," Smothers.
