T.R. Miller's Tripp Owens found himself in ninth place after the first day of competition at the Class 3A state golf tournament at Huntsville.
Owens, who was also ninth in last year's state meet, shot an 11-over-par 82 in Monday's opening round. That put him five strokes back of tri-leaders Michael McMunn of Ardmore, Walker Stinson of Montgomery Academy and Shawn Wigley of Plainview, who all shot 77. Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery Academy and Timothy Jackson of Elba were both one shot back at 78.
Montgomery Academy, which had three players among the top six, had a huge lead after day one in the race for the team championship. Montgomery Academy had a team score of 320. Elba and Leeds were tied for second place, a distant 21 strokes back at 341.
The tournament finished up with another 18-hole round Tuesday.
