One of Tripp Owens' top concerns going into the Class 3A state golf tournament at Huntsville was falling too far behind in the first day of competition.
While Owens had a respectable round of 82 in Monday's first day of competition, it did put him in a pretty good hole. The T.R. Miller sophomore was within shouting distance at five strokes back, but he stood in ninth place.
Owens responded with a furious comeback charge in Tuesday's final 18 holes. Owens moved up six spots on the leader board to third place and finished one stroke shy of the individual championship.
In fact, the one-over-par 73 Owens shot in the final round was the best 18-hole performance by any player in the tournament. That gave him a two-day total of 155.
Montgomery Academy's Hunter Hamrick and Elba's Timothy Jackson both shared the individual title. Both players shot 78 on the first day and 76 on the second day for a final total of 154.
Montgomery Academy, which had a 24-stroke lead after the first day of team competition, widened that final margin to 34 strokes. The Eagles followed their opening day total of 320 with a 317 on the second day for a final total of 637. Elba finished runner-up at 671, while Leeds was third at 684. Leeds and Elba had been tied for second place after the first day of competition.
