The utility infrastructures of cities and towns across the United States are crumbling, and unfortunately Brewton is no exception. Decades of use have taken their toll on the pipes carrying water underneath our neighborhoods.
Though it's something we seldom have cause to think about, the flow of sanitary water into our homes by way of these pipes is as important to our way of life as any other government-provided service. It plays an important role in our lives from the standpoints of health and hygiene, while keeping our lawns alive during periods devoid of rainfall. And if someone's house catches fire, the water flowing from hydrants used by the fire department can be all that stands in the way of losing everything.
The city is now undertaking work to upgrade and replace some of its aging water lines, doing the work itself to save money. Hopefully, this is work that will continue into the future, as cost allows. One need only step outside during a south Alabama summer to realize that those water lines are transporting the lifeblood of our community.
