On Monday, June 7, investigators with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office arrested Douglas Sanford Evans Jr. for assault, second degree and reckless endangerment.
Douglas originally arrived at the Escambia Regional Child Advocacy Center to be interviewed by Sgt. Kenny Brazile, who is an investigator assigned to the Child Advocacy Center. However, when confronted by Brazile, Douglas started his vehicle and began leaving the parking lot.
Immediately, Brazile reached through the window and tried switching off the ignition. A struggle ensued as Douglas tried driving off by screeching his vehicle's tires with Brazile hanging inside the vehicle.
Brazile was able to snatch the gearshift into park within seven feet of the Child Advocacy Center building. Another family member instantly grabbed a two-year-old child from the passenger side window as Brazile still struggled with Douglas. Douglas was subdued with the help of Sheriff Grover W. Smith, who ran across the parking lot after witnessing the incident, according to Major Mike Murphy.
Douglas was escorted to the Escambia County Detention Center and was booked for assault, second degree and reckless endangerment. A follow-up investigation by the 21st Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force led to additional charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance -- crystal methamphetamines, unlawful possession of a controlled substance -- Lortab, unlawful possession of marijuana, first degree with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
At press time, Douglas remained in the Escambia County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond.
