Every Thursday this summer, the Brewton Public Library will be having a special program for kids to promote reading.
The program, called "Step to the Beat, Read!" is at 10 a.m. on Thursdays, and everyone is invited to the library for storytime with Miss Becky (Blackmon), sing-a-longs and special guests and activities.
So far, children have been introduced to storyteller Ray Lane and a program on electrical safety. Last Thursday, Blackmon acted as "Professor of Bubbleology" and taught a group of children several tricks to try with ordinary bubbles.
More than 80 children were at the library for the summer program the first week and between 60 and 70 turned out for the following two programs.
Several local businesses have donated refreshments for the vacation reading program, and others have contributed to an incentive program.
Children can pick up a reading log at the library and with every goal they reach by reading a certain number of books, they get a coupon to redeem at a local business.
