In the last ten days, The Brewton Standard has reported three times on the work of the 21st Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. The Drug Task Force is no doubt busy year-round, but reports of recent arrests serve as back-to-back reminders that law enforcement agents are working toward a drug-free Escambia County.
Working on the area's drug problem is a priority for Brewton's residents and leaders, as evidenced by its frequent mention in the recent race for Escambia County District Attorney and by the letters and messages from concerned citizens that we receive here at the newspaper.
It's clear that pleas for something to be done about the drug problem are being answered. The Task Force's seizure of 35 firearms last week and the arrest of 12 people reported in this edition of The Brewton Standard are both reassurance that the county is becoming cleaner.
And agents with the 21st Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force don't work alone. They benefit from the cooperation of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, Brewton Police Department, East Brewton Police Department, Flomaton Police Department, Atmore Police Department, the Escambia County District Attorney's Office and the Escambia County Commission. All of Escambia County's law enforcement entities have a hand in reducing drug crime in our communities.
Recent arrests may only make up a small percentage of drug criminals in the area, but they send a message to us as concerned people and to other drug distributors that the Drug Task Force is on the job.
