Nick Porter did not use any fancy formula for his success.
"He just threw strikes and let his defense do the work," Brewton American Legion coach Jim Morrill said after Post 79 blanked visiting Wiregrass Thursday 10-0 in five innings.
Porter scattered four hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts in the complete game victory.
The victory was a much needed one for Brewton (3-8), which halted a five-game losing streak.
"It was really good to see our players respond with a game like this after a tough weekend last week at the Dothan Tournament. We didn't play badly over there (where Brewton went 0-4), but we didn't win any games," Morrill said.
Post 79's opportunity to complete a doubleheader sweep against Wiregrass was stopped by Mother Nature, as Thursday's second game was halted after two innings with the score deadlocked at 2-2.
Brewton more or less singled Wiregrass to death in the victory. Out of Post 79's 11 hits, 10 were singles. That hit total included perfect three-for-three days by Jacob Salter and R.J. Thompson. Nick Driver added a pair of singles to the attack.
First inning defensive breakdowns by Wiregrass led to four runs for Brewton and gave Porter all the support he needed.
Clay Mather and R.J. Thompson both reached on infield errors to start the frame. After Kyle Reed sacrificed the runners into scoring position, Jordan Ball came through with a two-run single.
Brewton was able to get two more runs across courtesy of a walk to Brad Lannom, a single by Driver, another error on a ball hit by Eli Cook and a single by Salter.
Brewton ran its lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the second inning. Thompson started the rally with Post 79's lone extra base hit, a triple. Reed delivered an RBI single to make it 5-0. Singles by Lannom, Driver and Salter produced two more runs.
Post 79 kicked the 10-run rule into effect when it tallied three more runs in the fourth inning. Lannom led off with a walk. After the next two batters were retired, Salter and Jordan Cauley both singled. Mather drew a walk and Thompson stroked his third hit of the game,

"This was a good game for us not just because we won, but everybody contributed," Morrill said.
Brewton will travel to Straughn Monday for a doubleheader against Covington County. The first game starts at 5 p.m.
