Sheriff Grover W Smith would like to announce that applications for the Youth Police Academy, Class #4, are still being accepted. The Youth Police Academy is sponsored by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, Brewton Police Department and the Jefferson Davis Community College. The Academy is a five day n four night camp designed to give boys and girls, ages 12-17, a brief glimpse into the field of Law Enforcement. Students will receive some of the same type of training that officers receive in the real Police Academy.
The Academy will be held on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College and will begin on Monday, July 19th and will conclude on Friday, July 23rd. Students will stay in the Lakeview Apartments, which are owned by JDCC, with members of the Academy Staff. Students will receive training in several law enforcement related topics including firearm safety, officer safety techniques, crime scene investigations, latent fingerprint technology, illegal drug identification and abuse consequences, K-9 demonstrations, SWAT techniques, alcohol abuse prevention and many others. Academy Instructors are law enforcement officers from various agencies including the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, Brewton Police Department, Alabama Department of Public Safety, Alabama ABC Board, Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, 21st Judicial Drug Task Force, Escambia County Domestic Violence Crime Unit, Alabama Department of Corrections and others.
Applications can be picked up at the Escambia County Sheriff's Office in Brewton or it can be mailed to you. Just contact Captain Chuck McMullen of the Sheriff's Office at 809-2151 or Officer Clair Sanborn of the Brewton Police Department at 867-3212 and an application package can be mailed right away.
The cost of the Youth Police Academy is $175.00. This fee covers the cost of lodging, food, training materials, Academy T-shirts, certificates, graduation banquet and other expenses. A $75 deposit is required at the time the application is received and the remainder due at check-in. There are still a few available positions for youth to participate in this summer's class.
