Child killed in car accident

The Brewton Police Department received a call at 4:55 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004 with a report of a vehicle accident in front of 1288 South Blvd.
Upon arrival at 5 p.m. they found a white automobile upside down. According to witnesses,the driver, 16-year-old Chelsey Laurel Berglund of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., swerved to avoid a box in the southbound lane.
She lost control of the vehicle, hit the curb and a passenger was ejected as the car went airborne.
The passenger, 10-year-old Chad W. Berglund, brother of the driver, was transferred to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The siblings were traveling from Fort Walton Beach to Brewton to visit their grandparents at the home of Freddie Roberts.
At this time Chief David Lovelace reports that speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the accident and the investigation is ongoing by Lt. Keith Hutchins and Sgt. Eric Suarez.
Chief Lovelace was visibly shaken by the incident.
Chief Lovelace praised the paramedics and the fire department for the job they did. He said that they work together to make it possible to deal as a team effort.
