Even the rain couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of the people of Brewton and East Brewton Saturday morning, as all waited for the arrival of Brewton's 1165th Military Police Company of the Alabama Army National Guard.
The troops left Fort Benning, Ga. at about 7 a.m. Saturday, escorted by Sheriff Grover Smith. Upon arriving just inside the Brewton city limits a few hours later, the bus carrying Brewton members of the 1165th was met by escorts from the Brewton Police Department, Brewton Fire Department and and a group of local motorcycle-riding volunteers.
The group proceeded through Brewton down Hwy. 31 before turning on Hwy. 41 to head toward the armory in Riverview.
Just past Murder Creek Bridge, Brewton Police and Fire escorts fell out of the procession and were replaced by East Brewton Police and Fire.
All along the route, volunteers had placed yellow ribbons, "Welcome Home" signs and American flags.
Upon arrival at the National Guard Armory in Riverview, members of the 1165th were greeted by crowds of loved ones. After a brief ceremony and singing of the national anthem by Tania Hall, the troops were released to be with their families.
